Sonja Tošković, Executive Director of the Belgrade Center for Human Rights, took part in a TV show Cultural Center on the issue of the migrant crisis in Serbia and Europe, and the attitude towards migrants in culture and society.

Sonja Tošković emphasized the specifics of Serbia as a transit country, in which migrants briefly stay on their way to the countries of Western Europe: „The countries of the European Union have much higher budgets and much more experience in dealing with this problem. In Serbia, the situation is different, because it is not easy for the country to develop institutional mechanisms and enable the integration of people who are only temporarily there. “

Sonja Tošković also referred to the activities implemented by the Belgrade Center for Human Rights that aim at changing social perceptions of migrants, and public attitudes towards them. As a partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights has, since 2012, provided asylum-seekers in Serbia with free legal aid: they are explained their rights and obligations and represented before the proper authorities in Serbia and the European Court of Human Rights. BCHR also continuously monitor the state of affairs both in the countries where the asylum-seekers come from and in Serbia, and work on the improvement of integration process of asylum-seekers and persons who were granted refugee status in Serbia.
