According to the UNHCR estimation, at the end of April 2017, 7,364 migrants were present in Serbia, which is around three hundred less then at the end of March. Of that number, around 81% (total of 5,985) persons resided in one of 5 asylum centres or 13 reception centres around the country, whereas most migrants were accommodated in centres in Obrenovac, Krnjaca, Adasevci and Presevo. Others stayed in abandoned warehouses near the main bus station downtown in Belgrade or at the places of non-formal gatherings nearby the border line with Hungary and Croatia.
Asylum Office data for April 2017 indicates that total of 552 foreign nationals expressed the intention to seek asylum in Serbia, out of which 504 men and 48 women. Based on their nationalities, asylum seekers mostly came from Afghanistan (348 asylum seekers), followed by Pakistan (108) and Iraq (18). Among asylum seekers in April, there were 285 children, out of which 8 were no accompanied by their primary guardians.
In April, the Asylum Office registered two asylum seekers, however there were no asylum application submissions. On the other hand, the Asylum office conducted 8 interviews in the asylum procedure for persons who had submitted their asylum applications in the previous period. When it comes to first instance decisions, the Asylum Office made one decision reject asylum to asylum seeker from Afghanistan and two refusing decisions on the applications by asylum seekers from Iraq and Iran. 11 asylum procedures of asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iraq and Cuba were absconded. On the other hand, there were no positive first instance decisions in April, and the number of granted refugee or protection statuses remained the same.
